PAST EXHIBITIONS
(En) Titled - Chiranjika Grasby
Wednesday 2nd of September - Saturday 3rd of October
Mon - Thurs 11am - 5pm // Fri 11am - 7pm // Sat 11am - 5pm // Sun CLOSED
Emerging artist and curator Chiranjika Grasby explores the recreation of human likeness in the language of miniature oil portraits on wood.
In (En)Titled, Grasby takes her interpretation of the miniature to a place of scrutiny on pop culture and ‘the celebrated’. Using sourced photographs of celebrity mugshots and arrest imagery as her reference, Grasby depicts those held in high regard at their lowest moments, attempting to challenge when and how we choose to place them on a pedestal. In the past social media platforms have been peppered with an infatuation for celebrity mug shots and the concepts of tearing down idolized personalities, with the dissemination of celebrity arrest images occurring on the daily. In the wake of 2020’s highlight on the BLM (Black Lives Matter) movement and society’s scrutiny on structural downfalls within law enforcement and the police, it’s important to acknowledge that marginalized populations are disproportionately targeted by the police. Whilst Grasby’s project began mid 2019 with a focus on celebrity identities, she acknowledges as a Person of Colour how privileged her upper class - and often white - celebrity subjects are in the situations they’re depicted in.
It’s Grasby’s hope that these works can serve as a somewhat satirical commentary on the way we view celebrities in such high regard, but she also doesn’t want this to detract from the realities of Black and Indigenous experiences with law enforcement and police. To recognize this, Grasby will be donating a portion of her personal income from any artwork sales to Sisters Inside - an Aboriginal organization aiding women and girls who have been imprisoned or criminalized.
Please join us on Wednesday 2nd September in person 5:30pm - 7:30pm or on Facebook live at 6pm to see this fantastic exhibition officially opened.

All the animals on this planet have had millennia to evolve and adapt to change in to what they are today. Some have done this in strange and spectacular ways. With the need to adapt being rapidly accelerated by climate change, these ways may become increasingly bizzare.

Specialising in the processes of line drawing and contemporary art, Sair Bean explores the possibilities of drawing by pushing the boundaries of conventional line making. Periphery challenges conventional drawing techniques by moving off the page and into space, time and objects; questioning whether line is limited just to pencil and paper.
Lines entwining, webbing, curving and lifting up and out, will in turn start to form strange and whimsical yogic creatures, allowing the unconscious to fully express itself. Bean’s use of a dynamic combination of materials and methods, including clay, paint, fabric and performance, will continue to challenge boundaries of traditional art.
Periphery hopes to celebrate the act of rule breaking, by confronting and testing the process, product and quality of line.
Please Join us on Monday the 4th of March 5:30pm - 7:30pm for the opening event.

April creates a new aesthetic and combines these fairly traditional media in a contemporary and often quirky way.
Drawing inspiration from the bands Camp Cope and Moaning Lisa, feminist authors such as Clementine Ford as well as artists such as Del Kathryn Barton and Kim Leutwyler, her work brings a range of inspirational Australian women from many walks of life into the spotlight and celebrates diversity and uniqueness.

Urban Cow Studio presents Fusion, a solo exhibition of mixed media paintings by South African born artist Louise van der Merwe.
Exploring issues of waste and recycling, the artist paints colourful landscapes and flora and fauna using acrylics, oils and melted plastic from recycled shopping bags. Today so many plastic bags end up in our waterways, destroying sea and birdlife, they also take years to break down in landfill. Mixed Emotions - Fruzsi Kenez
Thursday 5th of July - Saturday 28th July
Opening Wednesday 4th July 5:30pm - 7:30pm
Mon - Thurs 10am - 6pm // Fri 10am - 9pm // Sat 10am - 5pm // Sun 12pm - 5pm
Urban Cow Studio presents Mixed Emotions, a self-confessional solo exhibition of ceramic and illustration work by Fruzsi Kenez, discussing mental health, feminism and multi-cultural identity.
This is Kenez's first solo show since 2012, and 65th Adelaide-based showing of her work. Having taken the pedal off her art practice to found Peanut Gallery in 2016, she is now back in the studio, reflecting upon the experiences of the last five years. These include a year living in Tokyo, numerous adventures, problematic verbal exchanges, and valuable life lessons.
The driving ideas behind this exhibition are expressed through sculptural works in porcelain and raku as well as ink on paper paintings. Expect quizzical lady busts, sassy ceramic masks, paintings and artist books. This is Kenez's most autobiographical exhibition to date.
Through her trademark style of portraiture, Kenez tackles some testy subjects including mansplaining, unsavoury relationship experiences and quiet everyday racism like 'Where is your accent from?', 'You don't look Australian', and 'Wow, your English is really good.' These phrases may serve as chapters in her future memoir.
Themes of bi-sexuality and bi-erasure will also feature alongside gender politics and representations of private themes and personal anecdotes.

The Sum of Our Parts - Ellen and Emmica Schlobohm
Thursday 3rd of May - Saturday 2nd June
Opening Wednesday 2nd May 5:30pm - 7:30pm
Mon - Thurs 10am - 6pm // Fri 10am - 9pm // Sat 10am - 5pm // Sun 12pm - 5pm
The Sum of Our Parts is an exploration of female bodies, sisterhood and traditional Western ideas of beauty. As sisters with very different body types, Ellen and Emmica Schlobohm investigate how these differences have influenced and affected their relationship.
Through hand-cut paper works, Ellen provokes ideas around society's expectations of femininity and pays homage to her beautiful 'insides'. Emmica scrutinises notions of the self and the conflict between the physical world and the curated, digital world. Using photography, installation and words, Emmica invites viewers to inspect her mind close-up, with some pieces requiring the use of a magnifying glass.
The exhibition features individual and collaborative work as sisters create an intimate platform for self-reflection and contemplation.

Colour Seen - Marek Herburt
Thursday 8th of February - Friday 2nd March
Opening Wednesday the 7th of February 5:30pm - 7:30pm
Mon - Thurs 10am - 6pm // Fri 10am - 9pm // Sat 10am - 5pm // Sun 12pm - 5pm
Marek Herburt's latest body of work demonstrates his deep fascination with the Australian bush and desert landscape. Painting in his unique and distinct semi-abstracted, impressionistic style with a vibrant palette, Herburt captures the intense and enduring harshness of the Australian flora, but despite the overwhelming desolation the landscape also evokes a deep feeling of energy, life and beauty. Colours in all his paintings are the result of close observation of nature. He learned this observation technique during studies at the Lodz Academy of Arts. The technique is based on seeing colour through an opposite and contrasting colour. The result is that colours boost each other, creating a dynamic display. The ‘air perspective’ method also comes from the observation of nature. The colours create a perception of space and distance and are a result of what he sees in nature; what he knows about colours in nature; and what works best for the unique depiction in every painting.
BAM - Fin Rice
Thursday 11th of January - Saturday 30th January
Opening Wednesday the 10th of January 5:30pm - 7:30pm
Mon - Thurs 10am - 6pm // Fri 10am - 9pm // Sat 10am - 5pm // Sun 12pm - 5pm
FINART is all about capturing cool, iconic, images. Artist Fin Rice looks for an ageless quality that is bold but not overstated, that will lend itself naturally to longevity of the finished piece.
With Andy Warhol as a major influence, Rice’s aim is to create timeless images that have a pop art quality, whilst always considering each pieces viability as a commercial product. This body of work is about capturing a moment, and the relationship between the artist, the camera, the subject, and the light.
BAM addresses the juxtaposition of the numbered run between mass production and a unique and handmade series of artworks. BAM investigates the question of what ART is to the artist. Once an image has been captured, how does the artist ensure the authenticity and originality of the piece as a unique artwork, each time that image is generated?

Dual Spectrums - Tim Shaw and Bella Shaw
Wednesday 6th of December- Saturday 6th of January
Opening Wednesday 6th of December 5:30pm - 7:30pm
Mon - Thurs 10am - 6pm // Fri 10am - 9pm // Sat 10am - 5pm // Sun 12pm - 5pm
‘Dual Spectrums’ is an exhibition of the vibrant and colourful works of father and daughter, Tim and Bella Shaw. This is their first collaborative exhibition and combines Tim’s bold and colourful art glass with Bella’s vibrant and joyful paintings. Both artists feel it is their role to bring pleasure to their viewer, and this couldn’t be more evident in this dynamic exhibition; ‘Dual Spectrums.’
Tim Has a unique style that challenges the traditional concept of the vessel, transporting the viewer into alternate realms. His sculptural and functional works are both elegant and steeped in raw energy, exploring bold and vibrant colours, ethereal landscapes and communicating the passion that Tim transfers into his work. He describes his process as a combination of glassblowing and painting in the hot blowing stages, and sculpting and drawing in the cold working stages. Bella works primarily with paint, dabbling in glass as well. Influenced by her father’s strikingly vibrant work from a young age, Bella freely explores colour and expression, drawing on her own themes of the commonplace and surreal in her bold, yet intimate, style of work.

Pussy Grabs Back - Carrie Radzevicious
Wednesday 1st of November- Saturday 2nd of December
Opening Wednesday 1st of November 5:30pm - 7:30pm
Mon - Thurs 10am - 6pm // Fri 10am - 9pm // Sat 10am - 5pm // Sun 12pm - 5pm
Guest speaker, Lizzy Emery, independent researcher and writer, PhD Candidate, Flinders University
Modern feminism is at a crisis point. Nothing reflects this more than Donald Trump winning the majority of the white female vote in the 2016 United States presidential election, despite being unapologetic when comparing women to animals and bragging that powerful men can grab women “by the pussy”.
Pussy Grabs Back is a series of drawings and paintings that highlight both the persuasive energy of the millions of protesters attending women’s marches worldwide as well as the increasing level of cognitive dissonance that is shaping the discourse of modern feminism. Monochrome contour line drawings reduce the image of the modern woman nearly to the point of being a cartoon. These drawings are juxtaposed against paintings filled with bold blocks of colour and line that illustrate the energy, passion, anger and compassion of the modern woman living in an undeniably sexist world.
As a US Citizen living in Australia, Radzevicius’ work offers a connection with the millions of women and men who continue to protest during this tumultuous period in modern history. Gesture, line and both the presence and absence of colour attempt to soothe and inspire at the cusp of a new women's movement.
Carrie Radzevicius is an emerging artist whose use of gestural line forms fluid and unique narratives to create a visual representation of power and social relationships. She is currently a student at the University of South Australia studying visual art and creative practice.
