ICONIC ART STORE AND GALLERY, URBAN COW STUDIO,
TO CLOSE IN JANUARY 2022
Urban Cow Studio has been pivotal in Adelaide’s art community since the 1990s under the guise of owner Mick
Krieg. Selling an eclectic and exciting mix of locally designed and made artworks from 150 South Australian
artists, Urban Cow Studio specialises in gifts for that hard to buy for person. It's a treasure-trove of quirky and
beautiful creations, celebrating and promoting home-grown talent.
The decision to close the iconic business has not been entered into lightly. Recent years have thrown personal
challenges at Mick and his wife Rachel as they successfully worked through her cancer diagnosis and treatment,
alongside juggling three other hospitality businesses: the Howling Owl, Rhino Room; and Lowlife Bar (Rhino
Room basement). The couple have realised they are unable to give Urban Cow Studio the focused attention it
needs to grow and thrive both in-store and online into the future.
Mick & Rachel would like to see Urban Cow Studio continue under the ownership of an artist, artist collective or
art lover to continue the legacy of supporting SA creatives and connecting with creative community and would
ideally suit an owner operator.
“We believe it’s imperative to have an outlet where established and emerging South Australian artists can
display and sell their work side by side.” Mick said.
“We would suggest moving the physical shopfront to a locale with a smaller footprint and greater foot traffic
and have many ideas on potential locations where we feel the business would thrive.”
Mick and Rachel are keen to hear from people who have the passion, energy and creativity to take the iconic
South Australian business to the next level, and in the meantime look forward to seeing customers new and old
at the Urban Cow Studio to pick up unique and special South Australian-made gifts before the store closes its
doors at Christmas.
